New Years is a traditional time of reflection. But for me, the entire month of December became a time to reflect and take account. I turned 50. Just the sound of it is daunting-- -5-0- I remember thinking someone who was 40 was really old. However, my children did something to mark this important time that removed the sting and basically blew me away. I wanted to share it with you.
They got into my email and contacted any friends from my past they could find and invited them to send in stories, memories, and well wishes. Then they combined it all in a Web site. A Web tribute for all to see as a testament to my life. I cried and laughed as I went through each precious entry. For those of you reading this that contributed-- thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those who didn't-- check it out. It is way cool! I also am grateful for the cards and letters I received from those of you who didn't send your stories to Amber. The overwhelming response was humbling for sure. Reading your stories made 50 not so bad after all.
Sherry - it was an absolute pleasure to do something for your birthday - as I change roles to become an online workshop coordinator for the International Baccalaureate next week I was reflecting on what has happened within the online community over the past 18 months... I never ever dreamed of becoming involved in such a supportive and active community of Lifelong Learners as we are within the Web 2.0 community.... it has certainly been the most rewarding and exciting time for me and long may it continue into the future.... it also goes a long way to show that it has absolutely nothing to do with age.... I think 50 is the new 30 personally, hence we are only just beginning.
I understand from AK that you are going to attempt to re activate Tiny Ted, that would be marvellous - I have left a very capable lady in school as Tiny Ted's Mentor in my stead she will be keeping tabs on his journeys - it might be fun to get him to the edublogger community eg how many Key Note Speakers can he visit before NECC perhaps - it might raise his profile :-)
I look forward to being as fully involved in the dialogue in 2008, from a different viewpoint and wearing a slightly different hat..... Best Wishes for the family in 2008

Happy Birthday Sherry
You are an icon for many folks who you will probably never see or hear about. From West Texas this admirer wishes you the best. I have my angle on this web marvel (Open Source Software advocacy) but frequently rely on your posts for direction and support. Keep up the good work.

Sheryl, We haven't met. I just started reading your blog, thanks to the list by Janet Clarey. This was a wonderful thing for your kids to do. I hope we meet up some time at a conference or if you are in NZ again.

It was really touching that all over the past 50yrs, your friends from the past are gathering and united once again, communicating as one community on a blog.
